When asked to walk us through her creative process—from concept to the final baked piece—Kelsey explained, "Each loaf begins with a spark of inspiration, often drawn from the world around me or special requests from customers. Once I have a concept in mind, I sketch the design to visualize how it will translate onto the dough. I then prepare my sourdough, ensuring it's at the perfect stage for baking. Before baking, I either score the design onto the loaf or apply custom edible wafer paper to achieve the desired effect. It's a blend of planning and spontaneity, as the baking process can always introduce delightful surprises!"
Reflecting on what inspired her to start decorating loaves in this unique way and the challenges she faced in perfecting her techniques, she shared, "My journey into bread art began with a love for baking and a desire to make each loaf special. I wanted to combine my passion for art with baking, turning everyday bread into something that brings joy and a smile to people's faces. There were certainly challenges along the way, especially in mastering the techniques to ensure the designs remained intact and vibrant after baking. But with each bake, I learned and refined my methods, leading to the creations you see today."
When discussing the personal connection behind the animals and nature themes that frequently appear in her designs, Kelsey noted, "Absolutely, there's a personal connection. Animals and nature have always held a special place in my heart. The name 'Three Cats And A Pig' is a nod to my beloved pets, who are a constant source of inspiration. Incorporating elements of nature and animals into my designs feels like a natural extension of my life and passions, and I believe it resonates with many who share a love for the natural world."
Considering the overwhelmingly positive response to her bread art on the internet, she recalled a memorable moment, "The support and enthusiasm from the community have been overwhelming and heartwarming. One memorable moment was when a fellow baker reached out to collaborate on a special design, blending our unique styles into a single loaf. Additionally, receiving messages from individuals who've been inspired to start their own bread art journey because of my work is incredibly fulfilling. It's these connections and shared passions that make this journey so rewarding."
