It’s easy to dismiss a significant other’s suspicions about another person as jealousy. In worse cases, one might even see this as a sign of distrust, which can fracture the relationship to the point where it may be impossible to repair.
A woman thought her boyfriend was jealous and controlling when she grew close to a male teaching assistant in her grad school class. It became such a major issue that the couple split.

Friendships may shift boundaries, and it all depends on how you handle it
The author may not have noticed the boundaries shifting in her friendship with Eric, but her boyfriend, Jake, definitely did. Even when Jake told her, she didn't make a big deal out of it.
In doing so, she failed to see the lines being blurred between their supposed platonic relationship and something more.
"All friendships, even same-sex ones, have ambiguous and changing boundaries," clinical psychologist Dr. Linda Sapadin told the Washington Post. "You may think somebody's a best friend, and they just consider you a casual friend. How it's perceived is not always the same."
Dr. Sapadin noted that what happens next will still depend on how a person responds to the shift in dynamic. In the story’s case, the author refused to acknowledge Eric’s potential motives and repeatedly dismissed them as nothing to worry about.
She didn’t protect her boundaries, which led to the demise of her relationship with Jake.
“It means recognizing the limits of friendship and not putting unfair demands on one another. It also means having the right to say ‘no’ and to put limits on one another in ways that make the friendship work,” psychotherapist F. Diane Barth said, emphasizing that it is primarily about recognizing the differences between friendship and romance.
Barth adds that friendships can survive only if both parties are on the same page, and that if one hopes for things to turn romantic, “someone is going to get hurt.”
In the author’s case, she should’ve seen Eric’s previous advances as a red flag, especially when they became romantically involved. Unfortunately, she had to learn things the hard way.
