Black Twitter may seem like fun and games all the time, but it also helped amplify marginalized voices. American University journalism professor Sherri Williams discussed this in a 2025 interview, noting that Black people made themselves stand out online.
“Black people’s digital activism on Twitter got stereotypical shows canceled, held advertisers accountable for supporting those shows, and amplified the work of Black creatives as they used social media to break into Hollywood,” Williams said.
Social media has, indeed, become a tool for Black people to engage in activism. According to a Pew Research Center survey, Black people are especially likely to use these platforms to show support for a cause, encourage others to take action on important issues, and find information about rallies or protests in their area.
The survey also found that 7 out of 10 Black social media users believe these platforms effectively change people’s minds about political and social issues.
Many users would agree that the old Twitter is a far cry from what it became after Elon Musk acquired it and rebranded it as X. Journalist and scholar Meredith Clark experienced this firsthand when someone from Russia hacked into her account, cutting her off.
“It’s sad. It hurts really deep down because it’s the severing of community connection,” Clark said. “There are people who are there that I can only find there. That’s where I could easily be in touch with them.”
Black Twitter may no longer be the same for Clark, but she is seeing sparks of it on other platforms. One is Threads, and she hopes it doesn’t end the same way.
“There are a bunch of Twitter migrants, and folks are like, ‘Don’t bring that noise from Twitter over here. We’re having a good time.’ It’s like Twitter before everybody knew Twitter was popping. Please don’t bring that mess over here,” she said.
Black Twitter does an excellent job of bringing a uniquely comedic flavor while also highlighting important social issues. As you scroll, you will notice the substance beneath it all, laughs notwithstanding.
