The Wingspan Bird of Prey Centre was established in Rotorua, New Zealand in 2002. At Wingspan's core is a commitment to the conservation of the threatened Karearea New Zealand falcon. Being part of New Zealand's unique natural heritage, falcons are a taonga (treasured) species to tangata whenua (Maori, people of the land). One conservation story is that of 'Bindy' - a female New Zealand falcon. Bindy's mum, a breeding female falcon was found injured in the Kaingaroa Forest on the North Island of New Zealand. To give the three eggs the best chance of survival they were brought into Wingspan, hatched and are currently being reared and trained for release back into the wild. Bindy is one of the three - the other two are male falcons. To teach the falcons hunting techniques and to help them build stamina and gain strength, before release into the wild, the age old art of falconry is used.
