Interestingly, we don't know who invented the sandwich, but it has existed in some form or another for thousands of years.

One of the earliest known sandwich connoisseurs was Hillel the Elder, a rabbi and scholar who was born in Babylon and lived in Jerusalem during the first century B.C.

The Haggadah, a Jewish text read during the annual Passover Seder, says that Hillel made sandwiches using Paschal lamb, bitter herbs and unleavened matzoh bread. In Jewish tradition, during the Seder dinner, participants remember this by creating their own matzoh sandwiches.

However, the name was adopted only in the 18th century because of John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich. Some sources claim that he had sliced meat and bread brought to him at the gaming table on one occasion so that he could continue to play as he ate.

But it seems more likely that he ate these sandwiches as he worked at his desk and/or that the world became aware of them when he requested them in London society.

His title lent the preparation cachet, and soon it was fashionable to serve sandwiches in many parts of Europe, with the word making its way into the French language.

Since then, the sandwich has been incorporated into virtually every cuisine of the West by virtue of its simplicity of preparation, portability, and endless variety; qualities that become evident as you scroll through this subreddit.

We managed to get in touch with the moderators of 'Eat Sandwiches,' and they were kind enough to further introduce us to their online community.

"This subreddit is pretty relaxed, and we don't have to constantly police it," the team told Bored Panda. "Rarely, people get passionate about their food and start fighting, but not often."

The moderators said that all sandwiches are welcome on the subreddit, so determining what makes a good one is subjective and varies among the members.

They also humorously added the phrase "upvotes go brrr," implying that the community expresses its preferences through upvoting posts rather than a serious discussion on which recipes are superior to others.
