In collaboration with Granada Gallery and Jochen Leën, Belgian artist Tom Herck has created a new series, Decay Works, made from 85 million year old dinosaur remains. `Artist provocateur paints with dino skeleton pigments' (De Standaard national newspaper, 24/10/2020 and TV Limburg 22/10/2020).
Authentic dinosaur remains and pure gold leaf blend into the new generation of Decay Works series. The use of cut and finely moulded Edmontosaurus bones empathizes the Vanitas 'leitmotif' that is vital to the oeuvre of Tom.
The artist tests the material's technical, visual and material limits. Playing with various levels of (pre-)history he examines universal values. Viewers are provoked by the deliberate destruction of the iconic dinosaur relics, with the purpose of using its remnants in contemporary artworks.
Mythology stems from the past. As we move into an uncertain future, it has never been more important to understand the past; a prologue for the future.
Artist Biography
Tom Herck (born June 22, 1984, St. Truiden, Be) is a Belgian conceptual multidisciplinary artist. Raised in the unauthorized graffiti culture, Herck is best known for his unconventional and controversial public art installations. Herck also creates large and small sculptures, drawings, and paintings. The artist refines his techniques during his travels throughout Europe, leaving his mark in most of the capitals across the continent.
