Making friends as an adult can be a trying experience, particularly when you compare it to middle school where similar sneakers might have been enough. At the same time, as an adult, one often has enough experience to realize that people without friends might be that way for a reason.
A man went online to share his experience with trying to make friends with a guy at work who no one talked to. Then, conversation by conversation, he started to understand why this guy was the way he was. Netizens shared their condolences and a few also shared their similar experiences with men like this.
Trying to befriend a lonely looking person isn’t necessarily a bad thing
But one man learned the hard way why no one wanted to talk to his coworker
Adult friendships don’t tend to form quickly
Most of us have had a moment like the one in this story, spotting someone eating alone, feeling a pang of guilt, and deciding to sit down and say hello. It feels like a small, safe kindness. What the story shows so clearly is that it isn't always safe, and it isn't always small, because once you open that door you don't get to control what walks through it.
Part of the reason this trap is so easy to fall into is that making friends as an adult is already genuinely difficult. Once school and college disappear, so do the built in conditions that used to create friendship without any effort on our part. Psychologist Marisa Franco has explained to the American Psychological Association that organic friendships form out of repeated, unplanned contact combined with mutual vulnerability, and workplaces rarely offer both at once because professional norms discourage people from sharing much about themselves. Psychology Today points out that free time and energy shrink as adult responsibilities pile up, so when a chance for connection does appear, there's real pressure to make it work, even when something feels off.
That pressure is exactly what makes it hard to notice you've slipped into a one sided arrangement until you're already exhausted by it. What the coworker in this story describes, being cornered daily, listened to but never really heard, cut off mid sentence with a flat admission of disinterest, lines up closely with what researchers and counselors call a one sided friendship. Mindbodygreen notes that talking over someone, dismissing what they say, and never asking how they're doing are classic markers, and that the person absorbing all of this usually ends up quietly resentful long before they admit the relationship isn't really a friendship at all. Healthline adds that in these dynamics, a simple "how are you" from the other side is often just a formality on the way back to their own story.
Male loneliness can be self-inflicted
There's a cruel irony underneath all of this. The very behavior that leaves someone isolated at work, monopolizing conversations, missing social cues, treating other people as an audience rather than participants, is also what keeps them isolated. Research on loneliness backs this up. A large study published in Scientific Reports found that lonely individuals tend to be more self absorbed and are perceived by others as having weaker social skills in which poor social skills lead to unsatisfying interactions, which then get blamed on the other person, which leads to even more isolation. Nobody in this loop is choosing it consciously, but it's remarkably good at sustaining itself, and it's just as good at pulling in anyone who tries to interrupt it out of kindness.
That's the real risk for the person doing the reaching out. You go in expecting a low stakes lunch conversation and end up carrying an obligation you never agreed to, one that grows heavier the longer you stay polite about it. Coworkers can't simply be blocked or avoided the way you might handle this in other parts of life, which makes the exit far harder to find once the pattern sets in. Vague hints and hurried body language, the tools most of us rely on to end a conversation gently, often don't land with someone who isn't reading them in the first place, which means the only thing that tends to work is being plainly direct, even if that feels uncomfortable.
None of this means offering someone company is a mistake. It just means kindness doesn't obligate you to keep absorbing a relationship that only moves in one direction, and wanting a conversation instead of an audience isn't selfish, it's just what friendship is supposed to look like.
