Hi, I'm Beccy Ridsdel. I'm a ceramicist who is really interested in what lies underneath the surface of traditional floral dinnerware.
My idea was inspired by the art and craft debate - just what makes something art and not craft? Can an object be both? By taking a scalpel to traditional pottery - pretty, but everyday pieces that your grandma might have used - I hoped to see something else beneath the surface.
What I saw was a deeper layer of chintz and traditional florals, there was nothing else, but by the act of cutting I created something new. Something that was both craft and art, or maybe neither. I'll let you decide.
