Bearded men from the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador take supporting charities *very* seriously. But they go about it in a fun way.
For the second year, the Newfoundland & Labrador Beard and Moustache Club (NLBMC) created a calendar of diverse men dressed as mermen, or "MerB'ys", to raise money for charity.
This year the chosen charity is Violence Prevention Newfoundland & Labrador - a coalition of violence prevention organizations who's project "Deconstructing Masculinity: Engaging Men in Violence Prevention" aligns perfectly with the goals of the NLBMC.
Hasan Hai, founder of the NLBMC, explains the calendar: “Our club embraces and values diversity in our community such as gender identity, ethnicity, body shape, and sexual orientation.
Also, we delight in breaking down traditional gender stereotypes in creative ways. Men can be emotional, affectionate, vulnerable, and even whimsical creatures of fantasy if they want to be”.
The 2018 calendar raised over $300,000 for a mental health organization. The club is hoping to raise even more for Violence Prevention in 2019!
