The controversy erupted after TikTok creator Ana Elizabeth shared a video of the doll, prompting furious reactions online and questions about how the packaging even made it onto store shelves.
Highlights
- A shopper zoomed in on Barbie’s packaging and spotted tiny figures that she claimed resembled N*zi salutes.
- Furious viewers threatened to boycott Mattel, questioning how the alleged imagery passed the brand’s quality-control checks.
- Skeptics pushed back against the allegations, pointing to a surprising detail in the illustration that could change how the artwork is interpreted.
One person reacted, “Barbie was invented by a Jewish woman, so this would be quite ironic.”
Mattel faces boycott threats after a viral TikTok video claims Barbie packaging features “N*zi symbolism”
The controversy began when Ana Elizabeth spotted a gymnastics-themed Barbie from Mattel’s “You Can Do Anything” collection at a CVS Pharmacy in the United States last week.
The doll is dressed in a colorful gymnastics leotard and comes with ribbons and batons.
Behind her, the packaging features an illustrated crowd of blue-hued spectators in stadium stands.
Elizabeth zoomed in on the background, pointing out several figures whose raised arms appeared to resemble the N*zi salute.
She later added a German song associated with the regime to support her interpretation of the artwork.
In the video’s caption, she quipped, “She better win the Olympics, cause her coach will be heil-y disappointed.”
The clip quickly drew attention, with some viewers expressing disbelief that such imagery could appear on a children’s toy.
Outraged viewers questioned Mattel’s quality control, pointing to the Jewish heritage of Barbie’s founder, Ruth Handler
Commenters who agreed with Elizabeth’s interpretation argued that a major toy company should have caught potentially offensive imagery before the product reached stores, raising questions about the checks and reviews in place.
One person wrote, “Literally what else could that be? That’s crazy,” while another viewer added, “So we’re 100% boycotting Mattel.”
Another commenter said, “And it really is that deep because there are entire teams at Mattel to prevent things like this from happening.”
Others expressed, “If they were cheering, they would have both arms up. WHAT IN THE LITERAL HELL!”
Not everyone, however, was convinced by the interpretation.
Many viewers argued the illustrated figures were ordinary spectators celebrating a gymnast’s performance, not making a political statement.

One commenter wrote, “I’m a Jew, and I honestly don’t see it. It looks like a bunch of shadowed people at a game cheer.”
Another questioned the artwork itself, saying, “People will look for anything to be offended by. In that case, lock up the AI that made that random background.”
Others argued that the figures’ simplified poses made it hard to interpret their intended gestures.
One comment read, “They are cheering, and packaging art like that would be hard to show both arms. For the love not everything is some mysterious hate message.”
Another commenter wrote, “I’m more appalled by her weird leotard not covering her front part below. Looks ridiculous.”
“People always looking to see hate in everything. D*mn, give it up, it's a Barbie doll.”
The disagreement has left viewers interpreting the same tiny background figures in very different ways, with some seeing an offensive resemblance and others viewing the uproar as an overreaction.
Viewers noted that, on closer inspection, several miniature spectators in the illustration appear to have both arms raised
The claims also prompted some viewers to bring up Barbie’s origins.
Ruth Handler, a Jewish businesswoman, originally created the doll and co-founded Mattel with her husband, Elliot Handler.
Ruth was the daughter of Polish-Jewish immigrants, making the alleged imagery particularly ironic to some commenters.
While the Barbie doll itself was never given a specific religious identity, the Handlers were deeply connected to their Jewish heritage.
The doll appears to be the Barbie Rhythmic Gymnast Blonde Doll, a 12-inch figure from Mattel’s gymnastics-themed range.
Mattel’s US online store lists the rhythmic gymnast doll for $10.99.
For now, Mattel has not publicly addressed the latest claims, and it remains unclear whether the controversy will lead to any changes to the product or its packaging.
“Clearly they’ve never seen a photo of a concert with people having their hands in the air. Outrage in everything,” one netizen wrote
