Many photos on this list show people making a careless mistake and then paying a hefty price. The unfortunate outcome has likely left many of them deeply regretful, especially since the consequences were very much avoidable.
As psychiatry and neurobehavioral sciences professor J. Kim Penberthy points out that regret is hard to overcome because of the other burdensome feelings attached to it, such as remorse, sorrow, and helplessness. The bigger problem, however, is the health-related repercussions.
“Regret can increase our stress, negatively affect physical health, and throw off the balance of hormone and immune systems. Regret is not only unpleasant. It is unhealthy,” Penberthy explained.
Penberthy pointed out that action-related regrets, which typically come from a monumental mistake, urge people to learn from them. However, it is also the kind of regret that leads to mental health struggles like depression, anxiety, and a “sense of stuckness.”

Regret can also cause overwhelming stress. Clinical psychologist and University of Washington psychiatry and behavioral sciences professor Dr. Kristen Lindgren explains stress as a mismatch between our needs and resources.
“When we don’t have the resources to meet the demands of an event, that’s when we end up stressed. That's why two people in the same situation can experience different levels of stress,” she said.

We all know that stress isn’t good for our bodies. Beyond making us moody and irritable, Dr. Lindgren also mentioned how it affects our physical health and overall well-being.
“Chronic stress can weaken our immune system, making it easier to get sick and harder to recover, harm our cardiovascular system, and disrupt our social and work life, leaving us isolated,” she said.

People face different sources of stress, whether it's preparing for the next day’s 9 AM meeting with company execs or paying child support bills. They likely manage it in their own ways, but Dr. Lindgren simplified it by asking whether you can control the stressor.
“If you have control over the stressor, that pulls you to do good problem-solving. If you don’t have control over the stressor, it can be helpful to develop strategies to cope,” she said, while also providing examples such as improving sleep routines, getting regular exercise, and setting boundaries at work and in personal relationships.
