Allison Tyler's Curious Land Art Is So Precarious It Might Never Be Seen

I hike the woods foraging Nature's discards to construct ephemeral environmental installations that are held in place by tension, balance, and luck. Limiting my use of materials to only what I find castoff at each site, my unobtrusive curiosities may at first appear to be anomalies of nature's whim. Simple and precarious, these structures are not meant to last. Scurrying creatures, a gentle breeze, or a running stream might quickly destroy what I've created. Two recurring themes in my work are my "ladders" and "stitches", both constructed with various lengths of sticks or twigs I've broken to size with my hands. Although sometimes a lesson in futility, the process and repetition is meditative, personal. I also construct with dropped leaves and flowers, seed pods, dirt, bug carcasses, snow, stones, mushrooms, moss, feathers, thorns, bones, and whatever else the forest floor has to offer. I rarely use tools, but occasionally I will rip through a particularly stubborn fallen branch with the saw of my Leatherman. I don't know if anyone sees my art, except on Instagram, but it's delightful to think about making that connection - I was here, you were here. If you'd like me to decorate your woods, please get in touch.
