In an interview with Bored Panda, Dudi Ben Simon revealed that his creative process begins with a spark—an unexpected connection that captures his curiosity. It could be a photo in a magazine, an object on his desk, or a striking design, shape, or color that stands out.
Sometimes, ideas come effortlessly; other times, they unfold slowly over time. But once something intrigues him, he studies it closely, allowing inspiration to take shape until the vision becomes clear.
The artist follows two main principles: he makes sure to maintain the original appearance of the objects so that the viewers can recognize them, and then adds a twist which introduces a new perspective.
"For instance, in one of my works, I positioned a chocolate croissant on a belt. You can recognize the pastry and the belt, and there is an added element - the belt looks like the chocolate stripes on the croissant, so it seems the chocolate is made from a belt…" Dudi explained.
Minimalism is at the heart of Dudi's work, driven by his belief that a story is most powerful when stripped of unnecessary distractions.
"This is a principle I also apply in my day job. I work as a senior creative in an advertising agency," he said.
"I am developing ads where creativity must be straightforward, and easy to understand so to capture the audience quickly before they move on to the next ad," the artist added and noted that people should immediately grasp the concept without distractions.
Dudi believes that by stripping down to the bare essentials, his compositions allow the narrative to unfold naturally.
"Minimalism ensures no detail distracts from the core story," he added.
When asked about how he comes up with ideas, Dudi noted that in his works, he is always looking for the detail, the feature that could be developed further while maintaining the original essence.
"Sometimes, a series emerges from a single successful work, like my work on the exploration of office items," Dudi explained.
"These series began with a paper clip and expanded to include pins, staples, and perforator. Each variation builds on the previous and brings new layers to the concept," he added.
Dudi's works align with the concept of ‘readymade’, which involves using everyday objects outside of their original context to convey a new meaning.
And even though his works share some surreal qualities in how he transforms the familiar into the unexpected, Dudi doesn't directly identify himself as a Surrealist artist.
