The subway stations in New York City is a dynamic place - full of art, culture, and energy, just like the city itself. But it can also be incredibly disorienting, frustrating, and confusing at times - also like the city itself.
The average station spans at least two blocks and has at least two levels, and the complex transfer stations are even bigger and more complicated. Yet as we walk around the stations, we can only see so much. Tourists and local New Yorkers alike, we know the part of the stations we use, and the rest is a mystery.
Over the past few years I have been walking around the stations, sketching the stations and taking pictures. I overlaid them on each other, to juxtapose, and to reveal the bigger picture, the three-dimensionality of these underground spaces.
I hope they give you a new perspective, a new way of understanding, and perhaps a new found sentiment, for this mystifying world.
