Bored Panda reached out to Sylvie Facon to find out more about her work and the inspiration behind her unique designs. First, we asked about her background and how she first became interested in fashion and design. Sylvie answered: “In reality, it is not fashion that interests me: the dress as it is designed is just a support for the creation, like a painter's canvas, on which I can express myself. My dresses are not ‘à la mode’: they are timeless. Besides, fashion doesn't interest me.”
Sylvie’s designs are significantly different from many other creations on the fashion market. In order to find out more about her creative process, we asked her to tell us more about the steps she follows from the initial idea to the finished product and ready dress. The artist told us: “When an idea comes to me, I make a sketch while reflecting on the materials and techniques to be associated. Then, I carry out all the steps until the last point.”
We wanted to know about any particularly challenging or rewarding projects the artist has worked on in her career so far. Sylvie told us: ”I collaborate with a company that creates and manufactures lace: the Jean Bracq establishments. They provide me with everything I need and in exchange I obviously quote them when I use their products. Lace offers a wide variety of aspects and this makes it very interesting: from the finest to the most opaque, it can be used as a paint palette. As I am a passionate person, I like all the challenges and especially using materials that in principle we do not use on dresses.”
When looking at dresses created by Sylvie, you can definitely notice their dreamlike, fairy-tale quality. We asked about some of the inspirations behind these designs. The designer told us: “My main inspirations are nature, the heritage of my city, and books.”
Lastly, we wanted to know about any upcoming plans for the future, and some of the goals or ambitions for Sylvie’s brand and designs. She answered shortly: “For the future, I have no other ambition than to continue to live from my passion.”
