I work for a company that's very relaxed with scheduling and punctuality. My co workers, one in particular, is an hour or more late at least once a week. Another never shows up till 5-10 min after our 7 am start time. We work in an automotive shop so general feeling is "the trucks dont care if were on time" and "as long as the work gets done" so no one suffers any sort of repercussions for their tardines. I have been on time 98% of the time often going months without error. My problem arises when my boyfriend of 4 years is relocated to an archipelago in the great lake Erie. This island is an hour or so from my home/work and there is a 30 min ferry ride to the island. His new home for the next 2 summers is on an island famous for its party crowd, however we rarely venture out spare a golf cart ride or to go to one of its quiet and calm sister islands where we keep our boat docked in a private marina. Since his relocation we only get to see each other on the weekends he doesnt work. Usually 1-3 weekends a month. The true problem lies with the ferry schedule that takes me from the island his house is on to the mainland. Its latest ferry on sunday is 8pm going to the mainland and its earliest is 6am. The 6am ferry makes it impossible for me to get to work before 8am.. an hour after my start time. I figured since everyone was late all the time that they would not have a problem with me coming in late every other monday as it would give me almost 12 extra hours with the man I love and hardly get to see. I was wrong. They had a huge problem with it to the point I fear if I'm late on a monday or any day for any reason I could get fired. Meanwhile if my coworkers were late that same monday for no reason it would be a non issue. I explained I'm not there to party and that if I wanted to be hungover on Monday I could drink basically anywhere and achieve that. I offered to not take a lunch and or stay an hour after. Still no. I asked if there was ANYTHING I could do
Hard no "work day starts at 7 not 8". Yeah for only me it seems. I feel like if I had not said anything they wouldnt have even noticed the trend. Like I'm getting penalized for having a life outside of work and not wanting to cut my Sunday essentially in half in anticipation of getting to go to work. Its double standard city. I'm asking one hour every other week. I'm the only woman In the shop. I rarely call off. I do my work and i do it well plus
I log overtime and usually put in a 50hr work week so it's not like I'm even dipping under 40 hours. Are they being petty or am I the asshole?
