What’s perhaps even more impressive is how quickly all of this developed. The World Wide Web was invented by Tim Berners-Lee in 1989, and the first website was running at CERN by the end of 1990.
The website explained what the World Wide Web was and how people could use it. Pretty simple compared to what we’re used to today, right? Fast forward to 2026, and the web has grown so much that it’s hard to even figure out where it begins and ends.
Which brings us to perhaps the best way to understand the internet’s enormous scale: the sheer amount of information we’re dealing with. According to IDC research cited by Western Digital, the world is expected to generate around 274 zettabytes of data in 2026.
That’s 274 trillion gigabytes. Even if you could download one gigabyte every second without stopping, it would take you roughly 8.7 million years to get through that much data. And we’re talking about just one year’s worth!
With so much information available, there’s always something new waiting to be discovered. You could spend years exploring the internet and still barely scratch the surface.
Luckily, you don’t have to search through billions of websites to find something entertaining. Sometimes, all it takes is stumbling upon a funny picture that someone else was kind enough to share. And judging by the collection above, there’s certainly no shortage of those!
