Bored Panda reached out to Rob to learn more about him and his comics. He shared how his journey as an illustrator and comic creator began: “I started my drawing career in 2016. I always drew comics, and when I turned 30, I wanted to give it a try to live as a freelance illustrator. So then I just took a leap, and here I am!”
Pussloose has gained significant popularity and has a strong following on Instagram. We wanted to know what Rob thinks about his comics resonating with so many people.
“I think everyone loves cats. They can be really stubborn and live in their own world which makes them ideal as a character in a comic. Also, my comics are textless, so every age and every nationality understands them,” shared the illustrator.
Since Pussloose comics rely solely on visual storytelling, we asked its creator to share how he approaches creating a narrative without the use of words. “Using no words is indeed a challenge sometimes! I try to keep my visual ideas as simple as possible, and not put too many twists and turns in the jokes. Sometimes it’s hard (because some jokes just don’t 'work' but sometimes an image pops in my head, and that feeling is the best),” shared Rob.
Regarding the creative process, Rob told us how he comes up with ideas and what techniques he uses to bring them to life. “I always have a notebook with me, and I try to keep my mind open for new ideas and thoughts. I mainly work digitally on my iPad Pro. That way, I can draw my comics everywhere and put them online straight away.”
As you all might have noticed by now, the main character of Pussloose comics is an adorable cat. We asked Rob to share what it is about cats that fascinates him and inspires him to incorporate it into his artwork.
“My main inspiration is my own cat, Hobbes. He is stubborn and lazy and is just this weird little character that keeps inspiring me,” replied Rob.
As for what the future holds, Rob wrote: “I always try out something new! With Pussloose, I try to experiment with styles and jokes, and narratives. Things have been slow the last few years due to a certain pandemic, but I am working on new comics.”
