I went to a rooftop restaurant, Shri, in Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam last week and saw this: they used a locally-grown bonsai tree as Christmas decor. The restaurant manager told me this is their humble endeavour to contribute to the environment.
According to the manager, millions of Christmas trees are cut down then thrown away every year after just a few weeks. Every year, around 33 - 36 millions Christmas trees are cut down in the US and this figure is 50 - 60 millions in Europe. In tropical countries such as Vietnam, Christmas trees are imported from European countries by sea or even air freight which result in a huge deal of emissions. And he believes that such cycle of growing, cutting, transporting and throwing away millions of Christmas trees every year surely puts a serious burden on our environment.
That's why they used a locally-grown bonsai tree to cut down the cost and emissions from international transportation. More importantly, after Christmas celebration, the tree will not be thrown away. It will still be nurtured and continue growing at Shri. What do you think of this?
