I Draw A Character Named Nancy And She Is Everything...literally.

One day, I sat down to draw. Not because I was feeling particularly inspired, but because I told myself I had to. I had bought a cheap sketch book, my baby daughter had finally gone down for a nap, and I had to draw. I promised myself when I bought the sketch book that I was going to start drawing again, and I had been putting it off for weeks. Because I was busy, because I was tired, because I had two kids, because I didn't have any ideas, because naps are awesome, there was a ton of dirty laundry, the dishes needed done, there was a lot of really good tv on right then, I didn't really feel like it. I had a million excuses.
What I finally put down on paper was based off of a silly idea, a woman floating around with her head in the clouds. It wasn't a particularly good drawing, but it was something. I named her Nancy. The next day, I was annoyed with the world, so when I sat down to draw again, I drew the same woman's body, but instead of floating around in the clouds, she had a hatchet for a head. Again, it wasn't the greatest drawing, but it made me feel really good.
And so the Nancy series was born. I love her because I can look at her and know exactly what I was feeling when I drew her, but others might look and see something completely different. It has really opened my eyes to the way we feel and perceive emotions, not just in ourselves, but in others, as well. She took me out of my tiny world, gave me a new artistic purpose, helped me connect with others, and unlocked the door to a new plane of self expression. She's my favorite.
