During the Covid confinement I had to figure out a way to keep my kids entertained so I decided to make a short film with them. I wanted to create something dynamic that would be inspired by what my kids love, Japanese animation and comic books. I must admit I also grew up with the same influences and I managed to include some of my personal inspiration from comic book artists such as Jack Kirby, Alex Ross and Dan Brereton.
The project is entirely composed of individual pictures taken during the movement. I knew I needed the highest picture resolution for the post-process. To get as much details as possible I decide to shoot sequential photos instead of extracting pictures from HD video files.
The technique used to create the movement is based on stop-motion. Photo sequences are taken for each movement of the characters. The movement of the actors were achieved through very slow movement to avoid accident and to allow the camera to catch the whole sequence. To increase the speed of some movement I just skipped a few pictures in editing.
A post- process was applied on every photos, individually, with the artificial intelligence software, Prisma on iPad. I wanted to get a personalized look so I decided to mix and blend up to 5 different process together. The result was then painted in Photoshop and composited in Nuke. It was a slow and arduous process, but I ended up achieving the desired result.
