Bodyslam is one of Thailand’s most popular rock bands best known by the unique vocal of their front man, their follow-your-belief motto, and their energetic live performances. With five successful albums and a number of super hits, the band has enjoyed countless concerts and tours during 2002 - 2012 including their biggest sold-out gig, Bodyslam live in Kraam, at Bangkok’s Raj Rajamangala National Stadium with 60,000 audiences.
In 2013, Bodyslam wanted to showcase some new dimensions of their music. Therefore, the idea of turning their heavy rock music into acoustic renditions has come to live. Three shows of ‘Bodyslam Nunglen' (translating ‘Bodyslam Sitting Live)’ were scheduled consecutively in February at the 3,500-capacity Impact Exhibition Hall.
The hall wasn’t initially designed for live concerts so some design solutions were needed to fix the sound quality. The creative director then came up with the idea of a paper-tube hanging installation that would create a strong aesthetic for the show and provide the acoustic treatment at the same time.
The final work consists of 74,200 paper tubes that descend at various heights at which point they form a cave-like structure. The installation allows the band to inhabit the space and the audience to be fully immersed into the stunning scenes. This paper tube structure helps control sound reflections within the hall by absorbing excessive ambience so that it makes better sound quality for the live concert and the DVD recording.
The structure uses a pre-fabricated system so that it can be installed during a typical two-day setup preceding the show-day. The design also includes a series of searchlights, mirror balls, mini flashes, balloons, video mapping, and jellyfish lamps – all hidden above the structure at which point they go down to provide moments in the show that transform the look and feel of the scenes.
Designed by H.U.I. Co., Ltd., the production of Bodyslam Nunglen is recognized as the new and unique experience for the rock band’s live performance. This acclaimed gig also features the largest paper-tube structure ever created in Thailand. If you line up those 74,200 paper tubes, they would be 250,000 meters long.
