Unique photo archive of The Rolling Stones in the 1970s, including the on-stage, behind the scenes and close-up portraits, created by Dutch photographer Gijsbert Hanerkoot, who had been documenting the rock-n-roll history starting from 1970s.
“It was on a press reception in Hamburg in 1970. There was a group of german photographers all taking pictures of Mick Jagger. I finished taking my pictures, but couldn’t leave the place. So I handed my camera to Mick Jagger, and he took a photo of me, surrounded by that paparazzi crowd”.
That’s where the story began.
The following are hundreds of pictures of the Rolling stones band, taken in different cities and on different occasions.
They raise a curtain for the mystery of the persona of Mick Jagger. Is he such a crazy expressive rock-n-roll star, always high on drugs and doing crazy things? Or is it just a part of a scenic character whom he’s playing?
Who is Mick Jagger in normal life, if such a thing as “a normal life” exists for him?
The photo archive of Gijsbert Hanerkoot was re-discovered. Many pictures from it are unknown and unpublished. Others were published in the newspapers at the time, then exhibited in galleries… but they never formed a full story - which is the story of the Rolling Stones in the 1970s.
Now it’s time to return to the history - who were Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and all the rest before they became old but unbreakable dinosaurs of the rock scene? The photographs show the on-stage outrage, but also more thoughtful moments and deep expressions - a part of mystery of who are these people outside the scenic “brand”.
These materials will form a new photo book about the Rolling Stones.
It’s been prepared by Dostoevsky Publsihing - the editor specializing in photography and artist books.
The unusual “acordeon form” - called “leporello, plus a leather cover will create a unique object, made with care, and produced in the limited addition of a 1000 copies.
