This massive 900lb pumpkin carving at the Bronx Zoo was designed and carved by Pumpkin Sculpt USA to help bring attention to the organization 96 Elephants 96elephants.org which is dedicated to bringing attention to the fact that 96 African Elephants are killed each day for their ivory and to supporting legislation to help save them. Pumpkin carving is an ephemeral art form which only lasts a few days, helping to remind people that once the elephants are gone, they are gone for good. Only timely action will help save them.

900lb pumpkin elephant

Pumpkin Sculpt USA is owned and operated by Sue Beatrice (Food Network's Halloween Wars and SyFy's Carvers) and Andy Gertler (Travel Channel's Sand Masters). We are performance artists who have carved out a niche' where we transform pumpkins into fine art. Pumpkin sculpting is a dynamic and spontaneous medium that allows us the freedom to create large display scenes for events and festivals.
It starts with a sketch

While the team sketches out their concept there is a lot of creative decisions made on the fly.
First we have to find the right pumpkin.

Finding a pumpkin large enough for a carving like this is the first step.
Ready, set, go!

Once the pumpkins are placed in position the carving begins.
Time and patience.

From start to finish this carving took us 18 hours to complete.
Now it's time for the detail.

Once the skin is removed the real detail comes into play.
