I wrote this as I feel, as a big football fan, we need to champion those who really should have won it.
The English Premier League has churned out some of the best players in the world. From the current reigning champion - Cristiano Ronaldo - to the likes of Sir Bobby Charlton, David Beckham, Thierry Henry, Luis Suarez and many others. There are more up and coming stars like Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford whose promising talents have made them a toast of fans and critics alike.
However, it goes without saying that UK football has had its fair share of great players who didn't win the world best player award. Here's a list of the top 5 English premier league footballers who should have won the title.
1. David Beckham
He might not be crowned England's best footballer of all time, but his accomplishments cannot be underrated. Beckham who provided has teammates with some of the best crosses from both the midfield and corner angles, proved to a nightmare to every opponent. He led Manchester United to winning the UEFA Champions League, the FA Cup and the Premier League in 1999. Even though he was named club footballer of the year by UEFA, he lost the Ballon d'or award to Rivaldo. He transferred to AC Milan and then LA Galaxy. With a movie named after his bent freekicks, he sure deserves the world best player award.
2. Thierry Henry
The Frenchman who became a legend in Arsenal FC helped the club through one of its most impressive seasons ever. The 2003/2004 league season was one in which the London club did not lose any of the 38 league matches and further went on to win title. The former French striker scored 43 goals in that season for Arsenal to help the club maintain their unbeaten run - for the first time in over a century. He won the PFA player of the year award and the European Golden Boot that same year. After beating Manchester United to win the Community Shield in 2004, he was shortlisted for the Ballon d'or which he lost to Andriy Shevshenko. With Ronaldinho also making massive progress in Barcelona,, it wasn't easy for Henry to win the world best player award. France's inability to defend the Euro Cup title also affected his chances. But he still remains one of the best talents the football world has ever seen.
3. Michael Owen
At just 21, the Englishman came on to score two amazing goals to help Liverpool win the 2001 FA Cup. He scored 31 goals for the club that same season and was awarded the Ballon d'or. 18 of those goals were in the premier league, and they helped the club qualify for the Champions League. Michael Owen's prowess also made sure the team won the UEFA Cup - after beating AS Roma in Rome. The same year David Beckham was named runner up to Figo (who won the FIFA World player of the Year, Owen was voted eight.
4. Dennis Bergkamp
Between the early 1990s and 2000s, the Dutchman was a delight to watch in the football scene. In 1993, Bergkamp was voted runner up to Roberto Baggio who won the Ballon D'or. After playing for Inter Milan - which he joined in 1993 - he moved to Arsenal where he continued to make massive progress. But was never named the World best player till he retired from active soccer.
5. Didier Drogba
The Ivory Coast striker whose 8-year spell at Chelsea Football club earned him 157 goals in over 340 appearances went on to become a living legend to fans at Stamford Bridge. Drogba who was signed in 2004 from Marseille debuted in the match against Manchester United. His first goal was about a week later against Crystal Palace. He helped the blues win the 2004/2005 premier league title, which they won back to back the following year. He was also the highest goal scorer in the league for two seasons - 2007 and 2010. He further helped the club win their first champions league trophy ever in 2012. He was voted the best player the club has ever had, and won the African best player award on a few occasions as well. He never won the World best player title but that would have been well deserved.
