Over the past two weeks, you may have heard whisperings of a military coup in Myanmar. Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, has existed under a civilian government since 2011 before which it existed under the rule of a military junta ( 1962-2011) and as a British Colony (1895-1948). In November 2020, Myanmar held its second democratic election, where a majority voted in the National League for Democracy.The coup is in part fueled by allegations by the Military that the November 2020 election results are fraudulent. This is why on the second of February 2021, as parliament was about to begin session with the newly elected government, the Military detained various key people, including President Win Myint and State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi.
