101 Spoons, 101 Stories

I love traveling, delicious coffee and even more, good company. And most of all I love collecting memories. No matter the time and place, happiness in that right moment is the most important thing. So, as a memento of the special places and wonderful memories I always take a coffee spoon back home with me.

Do you remember the scene from the movie Eat, pray and love, when the main character Elizabeth is trying to buy a cappuccino in crowded bar in Rome? That is where it all began. Sant´Eustachio il Caffè is a magical place in the Roman streets, just a short distance from the Panteon. I brought back home some typical yellow cups… and spoons. Morning coffee now takes me back there, to the moment of pure happiness. So why only there, when there are so many beautiful places I want to return to? At least in the memories… So the collection of spoons started to grow.

In less than four year I have already 101 of them. At the beginning I used them, until I couldn´t remember where they come from. But as they started to pile up, I wanted to see them more. First, I put them in a frame, but soon it was too small for them. So they became a wall art. They are part of the kitchen and they are a subject of the conversation with our friends during their visits. Each spoon has its number (the order is random) and in the index, which is also at the wall, is written where it came from. And there is plenty room left.

I am not going to tell you all 101 stories. Many of them are very personal and I cherish them as my most valuable private collection. However, I will share with you at least some photos of places from where I collected the spoons.

We spent wonderful three weeks in London. Taking care of a cat… In a Victorian house hidden in romantic little alley as if it was from Hercule Poirot movie we became Mr. & Mrs. for a few days and our only concern was to explore London and feed the cat. His name is Blake. As a good son, he regularly let us know he was there. Here are some of his best greetings :)

One coffee in a glass! As you could have seen in previous gallery, Italians have one particularity, which I am very fond of. Coffee in the glass. There is no rational explanation. It tastes the same. Some people say, it gets cold faster in a glass cup, but according to my many years of testing this theory, it is just an excuse. The truth is hidden in Italian saying: “Anche l’occhio vuole la sua parte.” Freely translated as: Also eyes want a part of it. Yes, the reason is aesthetics. Coffee in the glass is just more beautiful. Ti amo, Italia!
